This is probably the first of its kind department in the country where a dedicated team treats ailments of the upper extremity. Dr. Vikas Gupta has more than 6,000 successful hand upper extremity surgeries to his credit. He has been a pioneer in this field, and many of the procedures were introduced by him in India. Therefore, many describe his clinic as “Centre Of Excellence For Wrist Surgery” All kinds of wrist disorders are treated by Dr. Vikas Gupta. Following are a few broad groups we have divided wrist disorders into:
Complex wrist trauma: This includes fractures of/around the wrist. Fractures could be associated with dislocation or complex fractures with multiple fragments. These fractures are treated with the latest techniques and new-generation implants (plates and screws).
Dr. Vikas Gupta was the first surgeon in India to use 3.5 mm locking plates for distal radius fractures in 2004.
He performed the first case in India of LDRS 2.4mm for fracture distal radius in 2007. In July 2010, the first variable angle locking plate for the distal radius was used by Dr. Vikas Gupta. He was also the first to use VA-LCP Volar Rim Distal Radius Plate 2.4 mm in India in April 2012. Presently, along with select few surgeons across the world, he is involved in designing the new implant for distal radius fracture
He was the first surgeon to perform arthroscopic assisted fixation for distal radius fracture and has the largest series so far in India.
Wrist Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery for wrist (keyhole surgery). Dr. Vikas Gupta has been the pioneer in bringing this technique to India. He has the largest series of arthroscopic TFCC repair in the country.
Total wrist replacement. Dr. Vikas Gupta performed Total Wrist replacement (ceramic on ceramic) in India. He was also the first surgeon to perform revision wrist replacement in the country.
Whenever joint is arthritic leading to pain/stiffness, prosthetic (artificial) joint is used to replace the normal joint. Indications of wrist replacement are painful or unstable or stiff wrist where no other procedure can give painless wrist movements. It is superior to wrist arthrodesis procedure, which is the conventionally used procedure.
Scaphoid fracture and other carpal bone injuries: Dr. Vikas Gupta did the first arthroscopic assisted fixation for scaphoid and commonly does percutaneous fixation of scaphoid fractures. He has been doing vascularized bone grafting for nonunion fracture scaphoid for more than 10 years.
Kienbock’s disorder is treated using standardized protocols with contemporary procedures like vascularized bone grafting, radial shortening, and capitates shortening and limited carpal fusion.
Dr. Vikas Gupta has the largest series of endoscopic carpal tunnel release in the country. Newer modalities like stem cell therapy for tendinopathies like tennis elbow.
Advanced rehabilitation therapy: Each surgery is complemented by advanced rehabilitation by our rehabilitation team. We use advanced braces like turnbuckle brace, continuous passive motion devices, and functional manual therapy with contemporary rehabilitation protocols which results in best outcomes after surgery.
