Understanding and Managing Distal Radius Fractures: Highlights from the Seminar and Workshop in Jammu

Introduction:

Distal radius fractures are among the most common injuries seen by orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. The Jammu Orthopaedic Society recently organized a seminar and workshop, focusing on these specific fractures. As an orthopaedic surgeon who had the opportunity to conduct this event, I would like to share some of the key highlights and insights gained from this valuable experience.

Importance of Distal Radius Fractures:

The distal radius is the most frequently fractured bone in the arm, often occurring due to a fall or trauma involving an outstretched hand. These fractures can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life, particularly due to wrist functionality limitations. Therefore, it is crucial for orthopaedic surgeons to stay updated with the latest advances in treating and managing this common injury.

Symposium Expanding Knowledge and Understanding distal radius was conducted on 10.2.24 in city of Jammu.

The symposium began with an overview of distal radius fractures, covering their prevalence, causes, and classifications. We explored the various diagnostic techniques available to accurately assess fracture severity, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRI. Additionally, we discussed the importance of identifying associated injuries, such as carpal bone fractures or ligament injuries, which can impact treatment decisions.

Treatment Options and Techniques:

One of the key focuses of the seminar was to evaluate the various treatment options available for distal radius fractures. We delved into traditional methods, such as closed reduction and casting, as well as the recent advances in surgical interventions, including external fixation and internal fixation using plates and screws. The pros and cons of each technique were thoroughly discussed, taking into account factors such as fracture stability, patient age, and expected functional outcomes.
Myself deliberated lecture on evolution of plates and distal radius fixation. Another lecture on treatment algorithm for distal radius fracture treatment.
Workshop: Hands-On Learning:

The practical workshop offered attendees the opportunity to refine their surgical skills and learn firsthand about the latest surgical techniques for distal radius fractures. We demonstrated the surgical approaches, highlighting important anatomical landmarks and guiding participants through the steps involved in each procedure. This interactive session allowed for active discussion and clarification of any queries raised by the participants.

Patient Rehabilitation and Follow-up:

Managing distal radius fractures doesn’t end with surgery. The seminar stressed the significance of comprehensive postoperative care, including rehabilitation protocols, physiotherapy, and long-term monitoring. Through case presentations and real-life scenarios, we emphasized the importance of understanding each patient’s unique circumstances and tailoring the treatment plan accordingly.

Conclusion:

The seminar and workshop on distal radius fractures organized by the Jammu Orthopaedic Society provided a vibrant platform for orthopaedic surgeons to expand their knowledge, exchange experiences, and refine their skills in managing this common injury. The event succeeded in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, fostering a collaborative environment for professional growth.

As orthopaedic surgeons, it is our responsibility to stay updated with the latest advancements in the field, and such focused seminars and workshops undoubtedly contribute to our continuous learning and improvement. By sharing our knowledge and experiences, we enhance patient care and strive towards better outcomes for those suffering from distal radius fractures and other orthopaedic conditions.
